Europe is facing one of its most severe heatwaves in recent history, with prolonged periods of extreme temperatures contributing to more than 1,300 excess deaths since June 21, according to the World Health Organization. Public health officials, emergency responders, and governments across the continent continue to respond as hospitals treat increasing numbers of heat-related illnesses, transportation systems struggle under extreme conditions, and power networks face growing demand.
While the immediate crisis is unfolding across Europe, scientists emphasize that the event reflects a broader global challenge. Many regions, including North America, parts of Asia, and Australia, are also entering periods where above-average temperatures are forecast, highlighting the growing importance of heat preparedness and resilient infrastructure.
The current heatwave has affected much of western, central, and southern Europe before expanding eastward. Heat exhaustion typically develops after prolonged exposure to high temperatures and dehydration. Symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache, muscle cramps, and fainting. Most people recover if they move to a cooler environment, rest, and replace lost fluids.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Body temperatures may exceed 40°C, while confusion, altered mental status, seizures, or loss of consciousness can develop rapidly. Without immediate cooling and emergency medical treatment, heat stroke can cause permanent organ damage or become fatal.
Health agencies continue urging residents to remain hydrated throughout the day, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest hours, wear lightweight clothing, and spend time in air-conditioned or shaded environments whenever possible. Officials also encourage people to check regularly on elderly relatives, neighbors, and anyone living alone, particularly if they have limited access to cooling.
Although Europe has experienced the most severe impacts in recent weeks, similar concerns exist elsewhere. Seasonal outlooks from meteorological agencies indicate that above-average temperatures are expected across parts of North America, Asia, and Australia during the coming months. While the timing and intensity will vary by region, forecasters continue to emphasize that periods of extreme heat are becoming an increasingly important public safety issue.

For individuals, preparation remains one of the most effective forms of protection. Public health experts recommend drinking water regularly before feeling thirsty, limiting strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat, wearing lightweight and light-coloured clothing, using sunscreen, and seeking air-conditioned environments whenever possible. Children and pets should never be left inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can rise to life-threatening levels within minutes, even on days that may not seem exceptionally hot.
As Europe continues to assess the full impact of the current heatwave, health officials caution that mortality figures may continue to change as additional data become available. The event has highlighted the importance of early warning systems, resilient infrastructure, public awareness, and coordinated emergency planning as communities adapt to prolonged periods of extreme heat.
The current crisis also serves as a reminder that heatwaves are more than weather events. They affect healthcare systems, transportation, energy supplies, food production, workplaces, and public safety simultaneously.
