Astronomers continue searching for a mysterious world believed to lie far beyond Neptune, one that could reshape our understanding of the Solar System if it exists.

Planet Nine remains one of astronomy’s greatest unsolved mysteries. Nearly a decade after scientists proposed a hidden world beyond Neptune, astronomers continue searching for evidence that could reshape our understanding of the Solar System.
Unlike Pluto, which was directly observed before its discovery was announced in 1930, Planet Nine has never been seen. Instead, astronomers infer its possible existence from the unusual motions of several distant icy bodies in the outer Solar System. These objects, known as extreme trans-Neptunian objects (ETNOs), follow elongated orbits that appear more clustered than many scientists would expect by chance alone.
Why Scientists Believe Planet Nine Exists
In 2016, California Institute of Technology astronomers Konstantin Batygin and Michael E. Brown proposed that these orbital patterns could be explained by the gravitational influence of an undiscovered planet. Their calculations suggested a world roughly five to ten times the mass of Earth, traveling on an elongated orbit hundreds of astronomical units from the Sun. At such a distance, one complete orbit could take 10,000 to 20,000 years, making the planet exceptionally difficult to detect.
Because Planet Nine would receive only a tiny fraction of the sunlight that reaches Earth, it would reflect very little light and move extremely slowly across the sky. Even powerful observatories could mistake it for a faint background object unless observations are repeated over long periods.
The search has intensified over the past several years. Astronomers have examined data from large sky surveys, including the Pan-STARRS1, Dark Energy Survey, and the Zwicky Transient Facility, eliminating large portions of the predicted search area without finding a confirmed planet. These efforts have significantly narrowed where Planet Nine could still be hiding but have not ruled it out entirely.
Interest increased again in 2025 when researchers analyzing archival infrared observations from Japan’s AKARI satellite and NASA’s Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) identified a moving infrared object that could be consistent with a distant planetary body. The researchers emphasized that the object is only a candidate, not a confirmed discovery, and that additional observations will be required to determine whether it truly represents Planet Nine. Even some scientists who support the Planet Nine hypothesis have cautioned that the candidate’s predicted orbit differs substantially from earlier models.
Other recent searches have produced different results. A targeted observational campaign published in 2026 examined one of the highest-probability regions where Planet Nine might be located but found no credible candidate. Rather than disproving the hypothesis, researchers concluded that the planet, if it exists, may simply be fainter, farther away or located outside the surveyed region.
Not all astronomers agree that Planet Nine exists. Some researchers argue that the unusual clustering of distant objects may result from observational bias, since telescopes naturally detect certain regions of the sky more effectively than others. Others suggest that the combined gravitational influence of many smaller icy bodies, rather than one large planet, could explain the observed orbital patterns. These competing explanations remain active areas of scientific research.
Could Planet Nine Ever Be Found?
One of the greatest hopes for resolving the mystery is the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile. Equipped with an 8.4-meter telescope and the world’s largest digital astronomical camera, the observatory is designed to repeatedly survey the southern sky over the coming decade. Because it will detect extremely faint moving objects, many astronomers believe it offers the best opportunity yet to either discover Planet Nine or place much tighter limits on where it could be hiding.
The implications of a discovery would extend well beyond adding another planet to classroom diagrams. Planet Nine could provide new clues about how the Solar System formed more than 4.5 billion years ago. Some formation models suggest it may have originated closer to the Sun before being scattered outward by gravitational interactions with Jupiter or Saturn. Others propose it could be a captured rogue planet that formed around another star before becoming bound to our Solar System. At present, these ideas remain hypotheses awaiting observational evidence.
The search has also driven advances in astronomical techniques. Researchers continue refining computer simulations, analyzing decades of archival observations and developing new methods for detecting faint, slow-moving objects at extreme distances. Even if Planet Nine is never found, the effort has already led to the discovery of numerous distant trans-Neptunian objects and a deeper understanding of the Solar System’s outer frontier.
For now, Planet Nine remains one of astronomy’s greatest unanswered questions. The evidence is compelling enough to sustain an active scientific search, yet insufficient to confirm that the planet exists. As more powerful observatories begin scanning the skies in the years ahead, astronomers may finally determine whether a hidden giant has been quietly orbiting the Sun for billions of years, or whether another explanation awaits discovery.
Whether Planet Nine is ultimately discovered or ruled out, the search continues to push the boundaries of planetary science. Every new telescope, survey and computer model brings astronomers closer to answering one of the Solar System’s most enduring mysteries.
