Scientists say the famous supervolcano remains active beneath Yellowstone National Park, but current monitoring shows no signs that a major eruption is imminent.

Few natural hazards capture the public imagination like the Yellowstone supervolcano. Videos and social media posts regularly claim the volcano is “overdue” or about to erupt, often predicting catastrophic consequences. Yet the latest scientific evidence paints a far different picture. Yellowstone remains one of the world’s most closely monitored volcanic systems, and experts say there is currently no indication that a major eruption is approaching.

Yellowstone National Park sits atop one of Earth’s largest volcanic systems, stretching beneath parts of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. The landscape visitors see today, including geysers, hot springs, fumaroles, and mud pots, is powered by heat rising from magma deep underground. This geothermal activity is a reminder that Yellowstone is an active volcanic system, but activity does not necessarily mean danger.

The Yellowstone caldera was formed by three enormous eruptions over the past 2.1 million years. The most recent occurred approximately 640,000 years ago, creating the present-day caldera that spans roughly 70 by 45 kilometers. Since then, the volcano has produced dozens of much smaller lava flows, with the latest occurring about 70,000 years ago.

Because of this history, Yellowstone is often described as a “supervolcano”, a term used for volcanic systems capable of producing eruptions exceeding 1,000 cubic kilometers of material. While such eruptions are among the largest known on Earth, scientists emphasize they are extraordinarily rare.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), working through the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO), continuously monitors the region using hundreds of instruments that measure earthquakes, ground deformation, gas emissions, and changes in geothermal activity. These systems provide scientists with a detailed picture of what is happening beneath the surface.

As of the latest monthly update released in July 2026, Yellowstone’s volcanic alert level remains NORMAL, and its aviation color code remains GREEN. During June, scientists detected 118 small earthquakes, well within normal background activity, and observed no significant uplift or subsidence of the caldera compared with earlier in the year. 

Small earthquake swarms are common throughout Yellowstone and are usually caused by movement of underground fluids or adjustments within the Earth’s crust rather than magma rising toward the surface. Likewise, the gradual inflation and deflation of the caldera has been observed for decades and is considered a normal part of the volcanic system.

Hydrothermal activity can sometimes create dramatic local events. In June, a small hydrothermal explosion occurred in Biscuit Basin, ejecting hot water, mud, and rocks and creating new vents. Although visually impressive, hydrothermal explosions differ from volcanic eruptions because they are driven by steam pressure rather than rising magma. Scientists do not consider such events evidence that a volcanic eruption is imminent. 

One of the biggest misconceptions is that Yellowstone is “overdue.” Geologists reject this idea because volcanoes do not operate on predictable schedules. The enormous eruptions that formed Yellowstone occurred hundreds of thousands of years apart, but that does not establish a timetable for future activity.

According to the USGS, the annual probability of another caldera-forming eruption is approximately 1 in 730,000, or about 0.00014% per year. Scientists also note that there is no evidence suggesting such an eruption is likely within the next several thousand years. 

Even the chance of any volcanic eruption, large or small, is extremely low. USGS researchers estimate the annual probability of a Yellowstone eruption of any size is roughly 0.001%, and even that may overestimate the short-term risk. 

Recent scientific studies continue to improve understanding of the volcanic system beneath Yellowstone. Research published in 2025 suggests that magma beneath the region may be supplied through tectonic processes rather than solely by a deep mantle plume, offering new insight into how large volcanic systems evolve. Other studies have mapped the upper portion of Yellowstone’s magma reservoir with unprecedented detail, showing that much of the system is a partially crystallized “magma mush” rather than a massive chamber of molten rock ready to erupt. These discoveries improve hazard assessment while reinforcing that Yellowstone is not currently showing signs associated with an impending eruption. 

If Yellowstone were ever to approach an eruption, scientists expect the warning signs would be unmistakable. A significant increase in earthquake activity, rapid and widespread ground deformation, changes in volcanic gas emissions, and other unusual geophysical signals would likely develop over weeks, months, or even years before a major eruption. Yellowstone’s extensive monitoring network was specifically designed to detect those changes early. 

A future large eruption would undoubtedly have major consequences. Heavy ashfall could affect large areas of the western United States, aviation could be disrupted across North America, agriculture might suffer from ash deposition, and global temperatures could temporarily decline because of volcanic particles injected into the atmosphere. However, these scenarios remain scientific contingency plans rather than forecasts.

For now, the evidence supports a much calmer conclusion. Yellowstone remains geologically active, as it has been for hundreds of thousands of years, but it is behaving much as scientists expect. The spectacular geysers, hot springs, and occasional hydrothermal explosions are reminders that immense heat still exists beneath the park, yet they are not signs that a catastrophic eruption is around the corner.

The Yellowstone supervolcano continues to be one of Earth’s most fascinating natural laboratories. Thanks to advances in monitoring technology and decades of research, scientists understand this volcanic system better than ever before. While no one can predict exactly when Yellowstone will erupt again, the best available evidence indicates that today’s greatest story is not an impending disaster, it is the remarkable ability of modern science to monitor one of the planet’s most powerful geological systems.
