Google celebrates September 27 as its birthday, but its own historical records point to other milestones, making the birth date of one of the internet’s most influential companies surprisingly difficult to pin down.

Every September 27, Google celebrates its birthday. The date has appeared in anniversary Doodles, company retrospectives and milestone celebrations, including its 25th anniversary in 2023 and 27th birthday in 2025.
There is just one complication: September 27 is not clearly the day Google was born.
Google itself has acknowledged the uncertainty. In a company history published on September 4, 2018, it stated that the exact date of its founding was “up for debate” and identified September 4 as the date Google Inc. was incorporated. Yet Google’s own 25th-birthday Doodle later described September 27, 1998, as the day Google Inc. was “officially born.”
Even authoritative histories do not perfectly agree. A Stanford University account places Google’s formal incorporation on September 7, 1998.
The conflicting dates are less a mystery than a reflection of how Google emerged: not in a single moment, but through a series of developments stretching across several years.
Google Existed Before Google Inc.
The story begins at Stanford University in the mid-1990s, where graduate students Larry Page and Sergey Brin began collaborating on a new approach to internet search.
Search engines already existed, but Page and Brin explored whether relationships among websites could help determine which pages were most important. Their research eventually produced PageRank, an algorithm that evaluated links between webpages as part of ranking search results.
Their early search engine was known as BackRub.
As the project developed, the name changed to Google, a play on “googol,” the mathematical term for 1 followed by 100 zeros. The name reflected the enormous amount of information the system was intended to organize.
That means Google’s technological origins predate the company established in 1998. Stanford describes Page and Brin as developing the PageRank algorithm in 1996, while its university history places the Google search project firmly within their graduate research before the business was founded.
Another milestone arrived before incorporation: the google.com domain was registered on September 15, 1997.
By 1998, the search engine was attracting attention beyond Stanford. In August, Sun Microsystems co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim provided Page and Brin with a $100,000 investment. Google’s corporate history identifies that investment as a turning point in the creation of Google Inc.
The company then moved from Stanford dorm rooms to its first office, a garage in Menlo Park, California, owned by Susan Wojcicki, who would later become an early Google employee and eventually chief executive of YouTube.
Even Google’s famous Doodles preceded the company’s formal incorporation. The first appeared in 1998 when Page and Brin modified the Google logo with a stick figure associated with the Burning Man festival, effectively telling users that the founders were away.
So when was Google actually born?
There is no single answer that captures every meaning of the question.
Why September 27 Became Google’s Birthday
Google’s own records demonstrate how complicated the date has become.
In its 2018 retrospective, the company explicitly stated that Google Inc. was incorporated on September 4, 1998, while acknowledging that the founding date was debatable. It also explained that Google had celebrated its birthday on September 27 for more than a decade.
Stanford University’s engineering history, however, gives September 7, 1998, as the formal incorporation date. That discrepancy between two authoritative sources is worth preserving rather than artificially resolving without the underlying corporate filing.
Then there is September 27.
Google has firmly embraced that date as its ceremonial birthday. On September 27, 2018, the company celebrated turning 20 while again noting that its precise birthday was debatable. Five years later, Google’s 25th-birthday Doodle went further, saying that Google Inc. was officially born on September 27, 1998, a statement that conflicts with Google’s own 2018 account identifying September 4 as its incorporation date.
The tradition nevertheless continues. On September 27, 2025, Google published a Doodle celebrating its 27th birthday and revived its original 1998 logo for the occasion.
The company’s birthday therefore represents something different from a straightforward incorporation anniversary.
There are several plausible milestones in Google’s emergence: Page and Brin’s Stanford research beginning in the mid-1990s; development of PageRank and BackRub; adoption of the Google name; registration of google.com in 1997; Bechtolsheim’s $100,000 investment in August 1998; formal incorporation in September; and the move into the Menlo Park garage.
What followed is considerably clearer.
Google expanded rapidly from a university research project into a global technology business. Search remained at its core, but the company eventually built or acquired products spanning email, mapping, mobile operating systems, web browsers, online video, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. Google became part of the newly created Alphabet corporate structure in 2015.
The uncertainty surrounding its birthday provides an unusual historical lesson. Companies that later become institutions do not always begin with a clean ceremonial starting point recognizable at the time.
Google did not suddenly appear on September 27, 1998. It evolved from years of research, experimentation, investment and entrepreneurship.
September 27 ultimately became the date Google chose to celebrate that story. Whether it was Google’s literal birthday is another question, and Google’s own historical accounts show why the answer remains more complicated than the date displayed on the birthday cake.
