Apple’s first iPhone goes on sale, launching the modern smartphone era and permanently changing communication, photography, business, and daily life.

On June 29, 2007, thousands of people lined up outside Apple Stores across the United States to purchase a device that many believed was simply another mobile phone. Instead, the first-generation iPhone became one of the most influential consumer technology products ever introduced, redefining personal computing and reshaping industries ranging from telecommunications to photography.

Nearly two decades later, the impact of that launch continues to influence how billions of people communicate, work, navigate, learn, shop, consume entertainment, and access information. Modern smartphones trace much of their design philosophy and user experience to the innovations introduced by Apple’s original iPhone.

The first iPhone had been unveiled nearly six months earlier during Apple’s Macworld keynote on January 9, 2007, where Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs famously described it as three products in one: “a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone, and a breakthrough Internet communications device.”

While touchscreen phones already existed, the iPhone approached mobile computing differently. Instead of relying on a physical keyboard or stylus, nearly every function could be performed through a large multi-touch display. Users could pinch to zoom photos, swipe through web pages, rotate images with their fingers, and type on a virtual keyboard that adapted to the application.

This intuitive interface dramatically lowered the learning curve for mobile devices and established interaction patterns that remain common today.

The original iPhone featured a 3.5-inch display with a resolution of 320 × 480 pixels, powered by Samsung-designed processors and offering either 4 GB or 8 GB of storage at launch. It included a 2-megapixel rear camera, Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth 2.0, quad-band GSM cellular support, and Apple’s Safari web browser.

Unlike many competing smartphones of the era, the iPhone displayed full desktop web pages instead of simplified mobile versions whenever possible, giving users an experience much closer to using a personal computer.

Apple partnered exclusively with AT&T in the United States, making the carrier the sole provider during the device’s initial release. The entry-level 4 GB model sold for US$499 with a two-year service agreement, while the 8 GB version cost US$599.

Although these prices were considered expensive in 2007, demand exceeded expectations. Long lines formed outside Apple retail locations days before launch, with many customers camping overnight to secure one of the first units.

The iPhone entered a competitive marketplace dominated by companies such as Nokia, Motorola, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion, Palm, and Microsoft-powered Windows Mobile devices. Many business professionals depended on BlackBerry smartphones because of their physical keyboards and reliable email capabilities, while Nokia led global mobile phone sales through a broad lineup of feature phones and smartphones.

A New Vision for Mobile Computing

One reason for the iPhone’s success was Apple’s emphasis on integrating hardware and software into a seamless user experience. Rather than treating the phone simply as a communication device, Apple designed it as a pocket-sized computer capable of handling music, photographs, web browsing, email, mapping, and multimedia from a single interface.

This philosophy would later expand dramatically with the introduction of the App Store in July 2008 alongside the iPhone 3G. Developers suddenly gained access to millions of customers through a centralized marketplace, leading to an explosion of mobile applications that fundamentally changed banking, transportation, healthcare, education, travel, gaming, and social networking.

Today, millions of apps power services that barely existed before smartphones, including ride-sharing platforms, food delivery, mobile payments, digital boarding passes, health tracking, remote work tools, and video conferencing.

Photography Moved Into Every Pocket

Although its first camera was relatively modest by today’s standards, Apple demonstrated that a camera permanently carried in a person’s pocket could fundamentally change how people documented their lives. Over successive generations, smartphone photography evolved into one of the largest disruptions ever experienced by the traditional camera industry.

Companies that once dominated compact digital cameras saw demand decline rapidly as smartphone cameras improved in image quality, computational photography, low-light performance, and video recording.

Business Went Mobile

Entire industries adapted to a workforce that could access email, documents, navigation, cloud services, and real-time collaboration from virtually anywhere. Mobile commerce expanded rapidly as retailers optimized websites and created dedicated applications for shopping, banking, and customer service.

Location services introduced new possibilities through GPS-enabled applications, allowing mapping, navigation, local business searches, fitness tracking, and emergency services to become everyday features.

The iPhone’s influence extended well beyond hardware sales. Competitors quickly redesigned their products around large touchscreens and app ecosystems, while Google’s Android operating system accelerated development to compete directly with Apple’s vision. The result was an entirely new global smartphone industry that continues to evolve today.

According to industry estimates, smartphone shipments have grown from only a few million advanced devices in the mid-2000s to well over one billion units annually worldwide. Apple has sold billions of iPhones since 2007, generating hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue and becoming one of the world’s most valuable companies.

The iPhone also reshaped software development, advertising, digital media, and entertainment. Streaming video, mobile gaming, social media, digital payments, and mobile content creation all expanded significantly because smartphones placed powerful computing capabilities into consumers’ hands.

The launch also influenced emerging technologies. Artificial intelligence assistants, augmented reality applications, satellite communications, health monitoring, biometric authentication, and mobile machine learning all build upon the computing platform established by the smartphone revolution.

Despite its enormous success, the original iPhone had limitations. It operated only on second-generation EDGE cellular networks, lacked third-party native applications, did not support copy-and-paste functionality, and omitted features that would become standard in later models. Yet its combination of hardware, software, and user experience established a blueprint that competitors rapidly adopted.

Nearly twenty years after its debut, the first iPhone remains one of the defining technology launches of the twenty-first century. Its influence reaches far beyond consumer electronics, touching nearly every aspect of modern society. From emergency response and healthcare to commerce, education, journalism, entertainment, and scientific collaboration, the smartphone revolution that began on June 29, 2007, continues to shape how people connect with one another and interact with the world.
